From January 27th to February 8th, 2026 I participated in the first artist residency at Eptek Centre in Summerside, PEI, Canada.
This was an exciting opportunity to follow up on some of the things that I had been experimenting with at the Kvitbrakka residency in Berlavag , Norway. I explored more with dyeing kelp, plaiting kelp over a form, and knitting and netting kelp.
I also worked on some baskets constructed with discarded plastic strapping with kelp stems/stipes added as handles. I had always kept my discarded plastics and my kelp work separate. They are so different in feel, smell, manipulability, and emotional response. But they DO have a story to tell together. The production of plastic is one of the drivers of climate change and climate change has been the driver behind the destruction of kelp forests globally.
This residency was made possible by arts grant from the Innovation PEI.
