cuvie and sugar kelp blades, sugar kelp stems/stipes
The kelp I used when making baskets on my artist residency at Kvitbrakka, Berlevag, Norway, was a bit thicker and a bit darker than the kelp I have worked with from the east coast of Canada. The blades of the dried cuvie kelp, which is not found on the east coast of Canada, changed to a dark olive green or rusty colour often with spots of orange or green on them. The Norwegian sugar kelp stems were thicker as well.
