Of Growing Concern: 40 Years of Textile Creation Amid the Havoc of Climate Change – exhibit 2024

A retrospective of over 200 pieces of  my work was exhibited at Eptek Art & Culture Centre, in Summerside, PEI, in March, 2024. The works demonstrated my constant exploration and experimentation with a range of materials, from seaweed to discarded plastics to yarn, as means to express my concern about the fragility of our environment.

During the project, I ran three basketry workshops, a PD session for PEI art teachers, assisted with several student sessions at Eptek, initiated the  monthly Makers Sessions, organized a presentation by the Bedeque Bay Environmental Management Association (BBEMA) on the local impacts of climate change, provided several small-group tours of the exhibit, and created a set of baskets that were raffled off in support of Eptek’s Youth Artist Fund.

My use of discarded plastics really has no impact on the volume that we discard, considering that we produce at least 400 million tonnes of plastic waste per year. I do try to create something that is familiar and aesthetically pleasing to draw viewers in, with the hope that once they see the materials she’s used they will think and rethink about our dependency on plastics, the impact that plastic and the production of plastic is having on our environment, and the urgency of taking action.

This project  was funded by an Innovation PEI arts grant and won the Premiere’s Award for Stand-out Project of the Year at the 2024 PEI Arts Awards.
